2026 SPRING DISTRICT RECAP

When you hear, “we need to set up more tables”, it is music to your ears.

Spring was in the air, and a room full of rose lovers and gardeners were ready to be inspired to get our gardens off to a great start. Our wonderful speakers and programs did just that…

ROSES IN ART

Friday night, we took an informative and beautiful trip through art history with Melissa Schiff, VP of the Albuquerque Rose Society, via the magic of Zoom. From the very realistic to the abstract, roses have always played a huge part in our history and culture.

SATURDAY:

PHYSIOLOGICAL AND GENETIC DISORDERS OF ROSES

Dr. Mark Windham, who assured us that this was one of his most boring programs, was, as we suspected, completely wrong. With his wit and wisdom, this program proved to be incredibly helpful in teaching us how roses respond to various stresses, such as nutritional deficiencies and water issues. Additionally, it provided valuable insights into identifying different genetic disorders that could affect our roses. Early detection and diagnosis can make a big difference, and now we are better equipped to handle what comes our way.

JUST DON’T CALL IT DIRT!

Our Vice Director, Sonja Lallemand, shared that there is in fact a difference in soil and dirt and how this “living organism” we call soil supports life! Taking a look at components, textures, structure, color, pH, and fertility, we were reminded of not only how having the right foundation for our roses makes all the difference but also what we can do. Can you say soil test???”

GROWING & CARING FOR ALL TYPES OF ROSES

Ron Daniels took us back to the basics and beyond, sharing his tips and tricks of a lifetime of growing roses. He also inspired us to look at sharing our gardens differently. Ron gives the gift of an “open garden”. He shared beautiful stories of those who have come — many coming when they were in their last stage of life and wanted the comfort of being in a garden. He shared that passersby often stop to ask a question or take a picture. I think most of us gasped when he shared that on one day of a recent open garden, he had 350 guests. Ron lives out his passion and ministry to share his love of growing roses with others. We also had the opportunity to purchase Ron’s book, Rose Therapy.

GROWING ROSES IN POTS

Jason Capote, ARS Consulting Rosarian and Horticulture Judge, shared his hands-on experience of growing roses in containers. Jason grows 170 roses in his New York City Garden and many of those he grows in containers. We learned how to pair the size of the rose and container, just what the lines on the containers actually mean, the best soil, products to use, and how to winter protect! Many of us had no idea full-size roses could flourish in containers. But now we’ve seen the pictures to prove it!

THANK YOUS

Thank you to our wonderful speakers. We appreciate your sharing your valuable time and talent to educate and inspire us.

We send our sincere thanks to Star Roses and Plants for the donation of their wonderful roses so that each person who attended could take something beautiful back to their garden.

And last but not least, a huge thank you to our District Board, especially Director Sharon Shipp and Vice Director Sonja Lallemand, for the unimaginable hours spent making sure this special weekend could happen.

2023 SPRING DISTRICT MEETING

Saturday, March 18
10 am – 4 pm
Effingham, IL

FROM THE DISTRICT DIRECTOR

I hope everyone had a great and happy holiday season. While we have had some spots of bad weather (cold and snowy), our weather has not been too bad this year. We are staying warm while reading seed and plant catalogs and making new plans for our garden. There are always many new plants and roses to tempt us, and 2023 will not be a disappointment.

We have finished planning the arrangements for our Spring District Meeting in Effingham, Illinois. We have picked Effingham again for its central location within the district, even though we do not have a local society in the area. It is centrally located and appears everyone can arrive at the meeting within a 3-hour drive time. Many members will have an even shorter drive. The meeting will start at 10:00 AM and end before 4:00 PM, which means most people can make it a day trip. We have reserved a few rooms for people who wish to stay Friday night. We are going out to eat on Friday evening at Niemergs Steak House at 1410 W. Fayette Avenue at 6:00 PM. Dinner is on your own but very reasonably priced.

The meeting will feature two exciting speakers. Jon Corkern, the Executive Director of the American Rose Society, will give an overview of the renovations which have been completed at the American Rose Center in Shreveport and the beautiful new gardens at the center. Jon’s enthusiasm for all the new programs and initiatives undertaken will be apparent. This is a special time in the development and expansion of the American Rose Society and America’s Rose Garden.

Our second speaker will be Carrie Bergs, along with her husband, Joe, who owns a 15 Acre historic farmstead. Her talk will be “Food for Thought When Fertilizing Roses, More is Not Always Better”. Carrie, the current Treasurer of the American Rose Society, and Joe grow over 400 rose bushes of all varieties.

First In-Person District Meeting Since Covid

On March 26, a cold, blustery, and dreary day the first in-person district meeting in 2 years was held!

🌹The rosy tone of the day was evident from the moment you walked through the door. Roses were everywhere! Thanks to Natalie Carmoli for bringing potted roses to share and Frank and Anne Devries for the gorgeous rose bouquets on all the tables – they looked as though they had just been picked from the garden! The bouquets were gifted to lucky winners to take home. Proven Winners provided a potted rose for each of us and some very large, gorgeous new rose varieties for an auction.

Huge thanks to Roger Brueckman and John Pais and team for the great day they planned. We had a beautiful place to meet, great food, and exceptional speakers.

SPEAKERS:

Natalie Carmoli kept us spellbound with behind the scenes information on the entire rose process beginning with working with hybridizers, taking cuttings, potting, care and even the rigorous testing process. Then we were treated to information on new roses coming to market and companion suggestions for our roses. Hint: I can tell you fragrance is back! Be on the lookout for Proven Winners roses at your garden centers and big box stores too. If you want to see images, go to ProvenWinners.com. You can order from the website too.

Dr. David Cloyd, took us on a Japanese Beetle journey, answered our questions and felt our pain! We heard the latest research and updates on products. And, of course answered the BIG QUESTION — giving us his opinion on beetle traps. He made us laugh even though we wanted to cry.

Teresa Downham of Indianapolis Rose Society extended an invitation to all district members to attend ROSEFEST

The Indianapolis Rose Society, Illinois Indiana ARS Rose District, and the Hamilton County Master Gardeners are hosting a day filled with beautiful roses, rose growing demonstrations, rose garden tour, free roses to first 40 guests, an ARS accredited rose show and wonderful  speakers.

She invited everyone to also bring roses as the day will include an ARS accredited rose show.

SATURDAY, JUNE 11, 9 am – 3 pm

HAMILTON CO 4H FAIRGROUNDS
2003 E PLEASANT STREET
NOBLESVILLE, IN

Check website for speaker information and other details… LINK HERE. John Hefner and Bill Carlson are writing the show schedules and those will be on the website soon.

🌹Share this invite with others! We hear from so many lamenting that there are fewer and fewer rose shows. We hope to have a full house with roses filling the show tables.
This is the Indy Rose Society’s outreach event and many visitors will be attending. Come and show us your beautiful roses! Everyone is welcome!
